How to differentiate yourself from large companies

As a small business, you have a unique opportunity to differentiate yourself from large companies through personal attention and care. By consciously investing in the customer experience, you can make a lasting impression that large companies often miss. Large companies like Amazon will spend less time on personality and more, more expensive, bigger.

Here are some ways to make your product personal.

  1. Handwritten thank you cards: Add a personally written thank you card to every order. This shows that there is a real person behind your brand who has invested time and attention in the customer. You can also write a personal message that ties in with what the customer bought.

  2. Clear product explanations: Provide clear, detailed explanations of your products. This can be in the form of a neat manual, maintenance tips. This shows that you want to help the customer get the most out of the product and that you care about what you are selling.

  3. Thoughtful packaging: Invest in durable, attractive packaging that matches your brand. This can be done by adding custom stickers, using tape in your brand color or with your logo on it. Choose a box that fits your products exactly so that you do not have to use filler material.

By consistently paying attention to these details, you'll not only create a memorable unboxing experience, but you'll also build a strong brand identity that will resonate with customers.

What I do

I always add a thank you card to every order. I designed it myself and it matches my branding. I put my products in a tissue paper and before I close it I add some star confetti to the products. I close the tissue paper with a sticker with my logo on it. As a gift I also add a freebie sticker and my business card to the order. And finally I place my logo on the box or envelope with a stamp. I don't use plastic, but I do try to protect my products as well as possible.

These are the things I am currently applying with the budget I have and what fits within my branding. Do you want me to think along with you about what is possible for you? Feel free to send me a message :)
